TAK Server Rebuild Case Study

J6 Solutions was engaged to resolve a complex TAK environment that had outgrown its original infrastructure, and to significantly extend its capability in the process.

The Requirement

The customer operated a legacy TAK Server that was suffering from persistent reliability and performance issues, resulting in frequent downtime and degraded operational effectiveness. In addition to resolving the stability problems, the customer required the integration of more than 500 Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) tracking devices into their TAK ecosystem, a task for which no efficient ingestion or management method existed.

The project therefore had two clear objectives: restore server reliability, and deliver a scalable, automated solution for managing a large and growing fleet of tracking devices.

J6 Solutions delivered a fully rebuilt TAK Server hosted on the customer's existing infrastructure, providing a stable, secure, and scalable platform capable of supporting current and future operational requirements.

Alongside the server rebuild, bespoke software and automation scripts were developed to streamline the integration and ongoing management of COTS tracking devices, enabling seamless ingestion of tracking data into the TAK Common Operating Picture (COP).

Project Delivery

The project began with a comprehensive technical assessment of the customer's existing TAK environment. This identified several critical issues affecting server performance, reliability, and user experience, providing a clear baseline from which to plan the rebuild.

Following the assessment, the TAK Server was rebuilt and upgraded to a modern, supportable architecture. The new platform delivered significantly improved system stability and availability, eliminating the downtime that had been affecting day-to-day operations. User training was delivered in parallel, ensuring that personnel could confidently administer and maintain the platform independently following handover.

The second phase addressed the COTS device integration requirement. With more than 500 tracking devices requiring onboarding, J6 Solutions developed bespoke software and automation tooling to enable rapid, scalable device management. Once integrated, device locations and status information were displayed directly within the TAK COP, giving users a unified operational picture across the entire fleet.

The solution also introduced automated monthly reporting, enabling stakeholders to monitor device activity, utilisation, and operational status without manual intervention.
